Art Exhibit: Shem Schutte
Emporium Wines & Underdog Café, Yellow Springs, Ohio
About the Artist Shem Schutte is a Springfield, Ohio based visual artist and photographer whose work explores the haunting poetry of forgotten places. A fifth-generation photographer, Schutte carries forward a deep family tradition of image-making while carving his own path through nocturnal explorations of abandoned factories, bridges, and industrial landscapes.
About the Exhibit Working primarily with long-exposure photography, he ventures into overlooked and deteriorating spaces after dark, transforming rusted steel, fractured concrete, and collapsing structures into luminous, cinematic scenes. Through careful composition and the quiet patience of extended exposure, Schutte reveals the hidden textures and silent histories embedded within these environments, where shadow and artificial light reshape decay into something strangely beautiful.
Based in Springfield, Ohio, Schutte's work balances documentary observation with a dreamlike sense of atmosphere, inviting viewers to consider the passage of time and the quiet stories held within forgotten architecture.
Beyond his work as an artist, Schutte is also a devoted father, grounding his creative life in both legacy and family. His photographs stand as reflections on memory, endurance, and the fragile beauty of places the world has left behind.
